
Antony Field
Leader, Antony Field, has established himself as one of Australia’s leadins performers and teachers on the classical guitar. Graduating from the Canberra School of Music with 1st Class Honours as ‘Most Outstanding Graduate’ for the Class of 1995, Antony achieved various accolades while studying including several first prizes in school-wide chamber music competitions and winning 2nd prize twice at the Darwin International Guitar Competition in 1993 and 1995. After studying in the UK on scholarship, Antony took up his appointment as Head of Guitar at the Victorian College of the Arts and since then he has performed in a wide range of ensembles on the electric and classical guitars including multiple premiers of new works, many live appearances for national ABC radio and numerous recordings.
In 2007 Antony received a highly competitive Australian Postgraduate Award to undertake the Masters in Performance (by research) course at the Victorian College of the Arts where he achieved the highest postgraduate mark at VCA Music for his 1st year recital. Antony believes passionately in creating a strong future for the classical guitar in Australia and the guitar course at the Victorian College of the Arts reflects this. His students are among the elite of Australian classical guitar players today and many are active professional players and competition prize winners on the scene in Australia.
Jeremy Tottenham
Arriving in Melbourne from rural Victoria in 2002, Jeremy undertook undergraduate performance studies at the Victorian College of the Arts, graduating in 2005. During his studies, Jeremy was a first prize-winner at numerous guitar competitions and was also a recipient of the John Vickery Scholarship for academic achievement.
In 2008 Jeremy completed his degree at the Victorian College of the Arts with first class honours, Now teaching and performing, Jeremy is a founding member of the Melbourne Guitar Quartet and his creative arrangements for the group have been featured on ABC Classic FM and performed at the Darwin International Guitar Festival.
Ben Dix
An honours graduate of the Victorian College of the Arts, Ben Dix is an accomplished musician in both classical and improvisational streams. Having involved himself in numerous ensembles with artists such as Tony Gould, Luke Howard, and Leonard Grigoryan, Ben has performed numerously in studio, concert, and live broadcast with ABC radio.
He has received substantial praise through his performances in competition and was nominated for the Margaret Sutherland Bursary Award in 2003, receiving the Kingston Arts Fellowship Grant in 2004. This award initiated his focus and direction to collaborate with many Melbourne based composers in performing and recording new solo and chamber compositions.
Ben is currently on staff at the Victorian College of the Arts Secondary School and Classical Guitar Society of Victoria, where he conducts the society’s Guitar Orchestra
Peter Karutz
A founding member of the Melbourne Guitar Quartet, Peter is well known and respected among the Melbourne guitar community. An energetic and vibrant player, Peter captures listeners with depth of musical expression and maturity in his performing. Graduating in 2005 from the Victorian College of the Arts, Peter completed his studies as one of the highest achieving musicians. In his final year he was awarded the prestigious Athenaeum Award through a rigorous interdepartmental competition.
In 2008 Peter took studies in a Master of Teaching at Melbourne University, where he consolidated his experience with current educational theory. In doing this, he received first class honors in two professional placement components of the course.
Peter complemented the Master of Teaching with a Master of Education at Melbourne University in 2010, where he excelled in areas of management and leadership. Now a TESOL specialist and evening coordinator at NMIT, Peter enjoys a balance of teaching and performing with MGQ. Having taught in schools throughout Melbourne, he is a valued and experienced member of the Melbourne’s education system.
Peter is also arranging new works for guitar family, to be premiered by the Melbourne Guitar Quartet.
