WORKSHOPS

There are seven workshops for the festival, three of which are master classes.

The master classes provide a different way to experience music – they provide a learning opportunity for performers, as well as observers, and the chance to see a master teacher at work.

The teachers will work with one student, a small number of students or an ensemble on a piece of music which is often broken down into smaller parts, and the teacher watches, listens and gives suggestions and tips on technique, musicianship and the historical context of the piece.

For the music student, the mentor of music students and the musically-curious audience, a masterclass is a perfect opportunity to find out what it takes to become a good musician.

Details of all the workshops are below.

Composition Workshop

with Paul Jarman

My workshop will be all about group participation in the creative process. We all have different ideas and levels of musical knowledge and we all have a unique approach to writing that is of equal relevance. My workshop will focus on three main stages. 1) Looking at examples of how an idea can be born, nourished and evolve into something bigger. 2) Improvisation as a group to explore sounds and rhythms in a relaxed and non-confronting way. 3) Working on each other’s ideas as a group to inspire fresh thought and development.

The workshop will be relaxed and non-confronting. Any ideas will be welcome. It is more like a forum on composition where participants and presenter are equal, and we have a unique opportunity to make some great music.

Please bring any pieces of music, or ideas that you have written and would like to share. Please bring an instrument of your choice if you have one. Of course your voice is fine, and there will be a piano on site. Also feel free to bring any ideas you have as written music and we can project these for viewing.
